Scholars engage with faculty judges and fellow scholars as they present their research at the 2018 UC LEADS Symposium at UCSB
SECOND SUMMER PLACEMENT POLICY
Students should contact mentors they are interested in working with during their second summer between the beginning of the Fall term at the prospective campus and November 1st. A few notes about the campus-specific processes are below:
- UC Berkeley: Interested scholars can fill out our UC Berkeley visiting scholar application form (typically available in September). UCB typically accepts 5 scholars, typically by mid-December. Visiting scholars' labs must physically be part of the main UC Berkeley campus in Berkeley, CA (not LBNL, LLNL, etc.). Visiting scholars are not registered for units/classes at UC Berkeley. The summer program is eight weeks long (starting mid-June and going for eight weeks). Please text or call Executive Director Lizarraga at #510.778.5165 if you would like more information.
- UC Davis: Students interested in conducting research at UC Davis for their second summer should:
- Research UC Davis faculty (web, ask current mentors for suggestions, etc.)
- Contact prospective mentors
- Send the UC Davis Coordinator a short list of prospective UCD mentors
- Once a spot with the UCD faculty mentor is confirmed, please send the UC Davis Coordinator and your home campus coordinator an email exchange between you and the UCD mentor confirming your acceptance into his/her lab
- Students may ideally be placed at UCD by May 1st
- UC Irvine: Scholars wishing to conduct their second summer research experience at UCI should contact the faculty mentor directly and once accepted, notify the UCI Coordinator to ensure faculty is apprised of 1) summer program tenure; 2) mentor responsibilities; and 3) program components. If a scholar is having difficulty securing a mentor, the UCI Coordinator is happy to assist in placement. Once a scholar is placed with a mentor at UCI, the UCI Coordinator will ask their home campus coordinator to forward a copy of the scholar’s initial application to UC LEADS for their files.
- UC Los Angeles: Students interested in conducting research at UCLA for their second summer should:
- Research and secure a spot with an UCLA Faculty Mentor (contact UCLA Coordinator or Program Director if assistance is needed)
- Once a spot has been confirmed with a faculty mentor, scholars will need to forward the acceptance email/correspondence with the faculty mentor to the UCLA coordinator (Cc: your home campus coordinator)
- Please Note: If the UCLA Program Director or Coordinator does not confirm receipt of email, please contact them directly
- Students should ideally be placed at UCLA By March
- UCLA typically accepts 5 visiting scholars, and does so by UCLA’s Summer Housing Deadline (early April)
- UC Merced: Scholars should contact the mentor they are interested in working with and confirm a space in a lab. They can then forward the email confirmation to the UCM Coordinator. Although space is usually available at UC Merced, scholars need to confirm a mentor and send confirmation by March 15 in order to meet the housing deadline.
- UC Riverside: Scholars wishing to conduct their second summer research experience at UCR should contact the faculty mentor directly and once accepted, notify the UCR Coordinator to ensure faculty is apprised of 1) summer program tenure; 2) mentor responsibilities; and 3) program components. If a scholar is having difficulty securing a mentor, the UCR Coordinator is happy to assist in placement. Once a scholar is placed with a mentor at UCR, the UCR Coordinator will ask their home campus coordinator to forward a copy of the scholar’s initial application to UC LEADS for their files.
- UC San Diego: Scholars must confirm a faculty mentor by February 1st. Once identified, scholars should notify the UCSD Coordinator. UCSD does not limit the number of visiting scholars they accept.
- UC San Francisco: UCSF takes scholars on a first come basis, but will only take two scholars from one campus if they have room (will email other Coordinators that they still have room). Scholars need to have a faculty mentor chosen by February 1st, because then faculty are paired with students for the rest of the summer program and less likely to take an unpaired UC LEADS student.
- UC Santa Barbara: Scholars should confirm a mentor prior to contacting the UCSB Coordinator, then forward the mentor’s confirmation email to the UCSB Coordinator with a note about wanting to participate in the UCSB summer program. Upon receipt of the confirmation email, Scholars are required to complete a second summer application. The application and placement confirmation must be completed by March 1 to meet the housing deadline.
- UC Santa Cruz: Scholars should contact potential mentors directly, but can contact the UCSC Coordinator for advice or support in finding a mentor. The housing deadline is June 1st.
